Argyll & Bute is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland created in the reorganization of 1996. The council area encompasses most of the former County of Argyll, part of the former County of Bute, and a small part of the former County of Dunbartonshire. It includes the islands of Tiree, Coll, Mull, Iona, Colonsay, Oronsay, Islay, Jura, Lismore, Bute, and many smaller islands.
The Argyll & Bute Archives Department is housed in the council's Manse Brae office at Lochgilphead, about 36 miles south of Oban. It has an extensive collection of old documents of particular interest to family historians with ancestral links to Argyll. Visitors are welcome to search the collection, but because space is very limited you should 'phone or e-mail in advance to make an appointment.
